Perryton Kinder has a lot to offer your child. Our  Waterford Early Learning Lab will start our children on the path to successful reading, the key to successful learning.  Our Guided Reading program, Sing Spell, Read and Write and Saxon Math are a few of our innovative programs we’ll be using this year.  Teachers and staff work well together to offer a balance between developmentally appropriate play and academics.

I know that when teachers, parents, and students work together, we can achieve higher standards.  Our school extends a warm invitation to all families to visit our school.  Please make every effort to contact your child’s teacher often and feel free to visit with me, the principal any time.  Get involved in the Parent Teacher Organization and volunteer to help in your child’s classroom.  Our staff and you have a very important common bond – wanting the very best for our children.

We’re going to have a great year.

Noe Cano, Principal

PHILOSOPHY

We believe that the early years set the stage for student success. When home, school, and community bond together, our children are better able to make good choices for successful futures.  We know that early childhood experiences shape the adult.

MISSION STATEMENT

Our mission is to provide an environment that is loving, safe, and instructionally strong so that all students can grow mentally and socially for a successful academic future.

PERRYTON ISD does not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, sex, or disability in providing educational services, activities and programs, including vocational programs, in accordance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as amended; Title IX of the Educational Amendments of 1972; Section 504 of the rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended; and Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

PERRYTON ISD will take steps to assure that lack of English language skills will not be a barrier to admission and participation in all educational programs.

ASBESTOS

Perryton I.S.D. is working hard to maintain compliance with federal and state regulations concerning asbestos.  Should you desire to review the asbestos management plan for your child’s school, a copy of the plan is available in the principal’s office as well as the school’s central administration office.  If you have any questions about the plan or this federally mandated program, please contact Bruce Cowan at 435-5478 ext. 228.

ATTENDANCE

Regular and punctual school attendance is essential for the student to make the most of his or her education – to benefit from teacher-led activities, to build each day’s learning on that of the previous day’s, and to grow as an individual.  To receive credit for the school year, a student must attend at least 90 percent of the 178 instructional days.  A student who attends fewer that 161 days cannot receive credit for the year unless the attendance committee finds that the absences are the result of extenuating circumstances.

*When a student is absent, a written note from the parent or guardian must always be sent to school within 2 school days.  An absence automatically becomes unexcused if a note is not received.  An excused absence is based on personal sickness, or death in the family, quarantine, weather, or road conditions making travel dangerous, and any other unusual cause acceptable to Perryton ISD.

 CAFETERIA SERVICES

A nutritious breakfast is served from 7:30-8:00 a.m.  Please pay for your child’s lunch daily, weekly, or monthly with a check.  THERE WILL BE NO LUNCHROOM CHARGES THIS YEAR except for emergencies.  Schools are not required to serve children who receive reduce-price or full-price meals but do not have money to pay.  CHARGING MEALS is for emergencies only.  If a child has 5 charges, it will be necessary for the child to bring lunch from home, go home with a parent for lunch, or have an alternate meal (peanut butter and jelly sandwich).  The cafeteria staff will take lunch money before school each day.

Breakfast  $1.00    Lunch  $1.25     Extra Milk or Juice  $.25

Perryton ISD offers free and reduced-price breakfasts and lunches to eligible students.  Applications forms are available in the school office.  Students who were eligible last year must fill out a NEW application within the first month of school.  Questions concerning eligibility should be directed to Cynthia Andreas at 435-5478 ext. 230.

Parents and family members are always welcome to join us for lunch.  Our cafeteria is located in the Perryton Kinder building.  Parents and visitors will wait and have lunch with students in the cafeteria.  Visitor lunches are $3.00.  If a student is leaving campus for lunch, parents must check the student out in the Perryton Kinder office before the child leaves class for lunch.

RETURNED CHECKS

Personal checks will be accepted but a $15.00 fee will be charged for all returned checks.

COMMUNICABLE DISEASES/CONDITIONS

To protect children from contagious illnesses, students infected with certain diseases are not allowed to come to school while contagious.  Parents of a student with a communicable or contagious disease should phone the school nurse or principal so that other students who have been exposed to the disease can be alerted.  Some of the most common of these diseases are: chicken pox, head lice, impetigo, pinkeye, and ringworm of the scalp.

COMMUNICATION BETWEEN HOME AND SCHOOL

Good communication between home and school regarding a child’s education is more that a “plus”: it’s essential for the student to make the most of the opportunities provided.  School communication starts with information documents such as this handbook, report cards, and student work for parents to review and sign.  It continues into interaction: messages and phone calls from teachers and school open houses or back-to-school nights.

Communication might also include requests for conferences-initiated by the school or the parent-to discuss student progress, to find out more about the curriculum and how the parent can support learning, to head off or resolve a problems, etc.  A parent who wants to schedule a phone or in-person conference with a teacher, counselor, or principal should call the school office at 435-2463 for an appointment.  PARENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO CALL TEACHERS AFTER 3:00 P.M.

COUNSELING

The school counselor’s role is to help our children feel happy, healthy, and safe at school and home.  When this is accomplished, our students can function better in the classroom, both academically and socially.  Individual or group counseling and classroom guidance are provided for our students.  Students may be referred for counseling by parents/guardians, family members, school personnel, or by self-referrals.  Mrs. Copeland is at Perryton Kinder on Wednesdays.  You are welcome to call for an appointment.

DISCIPLINE

Please see the PISD Discipline Management Plan and Student Code of Conduct Handbook.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL TREATMENT

If a student should have a medical emergency at school or a school-related activity when the parent cannot be reached, the school will need to have written parental consent to obtain emergency medical treatment.  Therefore, parents are asked each year to complete an emergency care consent form.  PARENTS SHOULD KEEP EMERGENCY CARE INFORMATION UP-TO-DATE (name of doctor, emergency phone numbers, allergies to medications, etc.)  Having current information will be of critical importance should an accident or injury occur that requires medical attention.  Please contact the school secretary to update any information.

HEALTH SERVICES AND ILLNESSES

A school nurse is assigned to our school and is always available in case of emergency during that time.  If your child becomes ill at school, we will notify you to come and get your child.  BE ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN WE HAVE A WORKING NUMBER AT WHICH WE CAN CONTACT YOU AT ALL TIMES.  The school nurse or office staff will provide temporary care, but it is extremely important that the child be picked up as soon as possible.

For the protection of all students, the following rules have been established and will be followed at all times.  A student will be sent home if any of these conditions exist:

       Fever of 100.4 or above

       Suspected Contagious Disease

       Injury Which Requires Doctor’s Attention

Feels Too Ill To Remain At School

       Diarrhea

       Vomiting

       Pink Eye

       Head Lice

Parents or guardians who have questions or would like to challenge Perryton Kinder’s Illness and Contagious Policy are welcome to contact the principal.

HOLIDAYS

Please see school calendar

MEDICATION

1.      Medications need to be sent in original containers.  Parents

often send medicines in plastic baggies, unlabeled bottles, etc.

2.      Parents need to keep enough medicine at home in case the student forgets to bring the medicine home.  It is the child’s or parent’s  responsibility to pick up the medicine in the

afternoon. (Two small bottles of the medication might be a

solution.  This way the child could leave the medication at

school for the duration of the treatment period.)

3.      Notes with date(s) the medicine is to be given, the dosage,

and the time of day must be sent with the medication.  The

note must have a parental signature. (Form notes are given

during enrollment and are available in the office.)  This is a

state law, and no medication will be given without written

parental permission. PLEAE READ THE SEPARATE

NOTE GIVEN DURING ENROLLMENT STATING OUR

          MEDICATION POLICY.

PARTIES

There will be four (4) parties per class during the school year.  These will include Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Easter, and Playday in May.  Holidays and other special occasions will be acknowledged through the children’s curriculum.  Birthday parties should be celebrated in the home.

PESTICIDES

This school occasionally applies pesticides. Information concerning these applications may be obtained from Bruce Cowan (435-5478).  A copy of the law can be obtained upon request in the Perryton Kinder office.  (Information provided as requirement mandated by Texas Pest Control Act 135b-6.  This program went into effect September 1, 1995.)

REPORT CARDS

Students in Pre-K and Kindergarten will receive report cards

 every nine weeks.

BUSES AND OTHER SCHOOL VEHICLES

The district makes buses available to all students living two or more miles from the school.  Buses are also made available to students living in areas of the city that require the use of or the crossing of major roadways (Hwy. 15, Main Street, and the Loop Road).  Information concerning bus routes and behavioral rules for this school year is provided upon registration.  Further information may be obtained by calling Tommy Cowan at 435-5478.

SEXUAL HARASSMENT

The District encourages parental and student support in its efforts to address and prevent sexual harassment and sexual abuse in the public schools.  Students and/or parents are encouraged to discuss their questions or concerns about the expectations in this area with a teacher, counselor, principal or Mike Horton, who serves as the District Title IX coordinator for students.

SITE-BASED DECISION MAKING COMMITTEE

Texas State House Bill 2885 requires all school districts to have a district and campus site-based decision making committee.  The Perryton Kinder Committee makes decisions concerning campus goals, budget, the evaluation of student performance as it relates to instructional decisions, the selection of staff, curriculum revisions, and instructional methods.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS

The District provides special programs for gifted and talented students, bilingual students, migrant students, students with limited English proficiency, dyslexic students and students with disabilities.  The coordinator of each program can answer questions about eligibility requirements, as well as programs and services offered in the District or by other organizations.  A student or parent with questions about these programs should contact the principal, Noah Cano or Mike Horton, Director of Special Programs for ISD.

SPEECH/LANGUAGE INTERVENTION PROGRAM

The Speech/Language program provides therapy for those children identified as having a communication disorder.  Communication disorders include articulation, language, fluency, voice, or any other concern which interferes with a child’s ability to communicate.  Children are referred by their classroom teacher or parent to the Speech/Language Pathologist for evaluation.  If they meet placement criteria, a child can only be placed in this program with the parent’s knowledge and consent.  Students will receive Speech/Language services during P.E. or Music.

STUDENT RECORDS

A student’s school records are confidential  and are protected from unauthorized inspection or use.  A cumulative record is maintained for each student from the time the student enters the Perryton ISD until the student withdraws or graduates.  This record moves with the student from school to school.  Parents have access to the records of their child.

By law, both parents, whether married, separated, or divorced, have access to the records of a student who is under 18 or a dependent for tax purposes.  A parent whose rights have been legally terminated will be denied access to the records if the school is given a copy of the court order terminating these rights.  Special Education records will be destroyed seven (7) years after cessation of services.

SUMMER SCHOOL

Summer school will be provided for students who qualify.  Students who speak English as their second language and/or need extra help with reading skills necessary for 1st grade will be eligible.  The program will run for 6 consecutive weeks beginning one week after the spring semester is over.

TUTORIALS

Tutorials will be offered during the school day for students needing extra help in reading as shown by the TPRI.

TESTING

Kindergarten students will be required to take the Texas Primary Reading Inventory in January and May.  The Iowa Test of Basic Skills is given in April.  Students in Pre-K will be expected to be familiar with at least 10 letters of the alphabet as assessed through a teacher check-list.

TITLE I READING AND MATH

Perryton Kinder has a School-wide Title I Reading and Math Program, which is funded by the Federal Government.  The funding we receive is used to employee teachers and paraprofessionals to accelerate student learning.  The School-wide Title I program provides a greater flexibility and creativity in serving all children who need extra educational opportunities to achieve grade level success.  All students have the same goal – to reach the Texas standards established by the Texas Education Agency.

TOYS

Toys should not be brought to school.  Exceptions to this rule occur only if a teacher should request such items in connection with a special unit of study.

VISITORS AT SCHOOL

Parents and other interested citizens are invited to the school to observe instructional programs and/or other school related activities.  Additionally, parents are encouraged to confer with the principal and teachers concerning their children’s progress in school.  School age boys and girls from other schools are not permitted to attend the school or visit the classrooms during the school day without specific clearance by the building principal.

For the safety of those within the school, all visitors must first report to the principal’s office for a visitor’s pass.  Visits to individual classrooms during the instructional time are permitted only with approval of the principal and teacher as long as the duration or frequency does not interfere with the delivery of instruction or disrupts the normal school environment.

COMPUTER RESOURCES

District resources have been invested in computer technology to broaden instruction and to prepare students for an increasingly computerized society.  Use of these resources is restricted to students working under a teacher’s supervision and to approved instructional purposes only.

DISABLED STUDENTS

(SECTION 504 REHABLITATION ACT OF 1973)

Each year the Perryton ISD will undertake to identify every qualified disabled student within the school district who is not receiving appropriate education and benefits due to him or her under Section 504 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act.  The following procedures are instituted to implement Section 504 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act and benefits compatible to those provided to non-disabled students.  The procedures are applicable only to Section 504.  Parents and students seeking services under the IDEA, the procedures for implementing the disabled student’s educational program shall be followed under the IDEA.  At any point in the 504 evaluation process, the 504 committee may refer a child to the Special Education Department if warranted.

The PISD will provide each eligible student with an educational need, as determined by the PISD, with a free appropriate public education regardless of the nature of the handicap.

A free appropriate public education is defined under 504 guidelines as special instruction, related services and/or reasonable modifications to the academic, non-academic, and extracurricular portions of the educational program appropriate for a particular child.

DRILLS-FIRE, TORNADO, AND OTHER EMERGENCIES

From time to time, students, teachers, and other district employees will participate in drills of emergency procedures.  When the alarm is sounded, students should follow the direction of teachers or others in charge quickly, quietly, and in an orderly manner.

EMERGENCY

Your child will participate in tornado and fire drills for maximum safety.  Many times weather such as blizzard conditions arrive suddenly.  Parents are asked to stay informed on suspect days by listening to our local radio station, KEYE 1400 AM.  KEYE will be informed as soon as a decision to dismiss early has been made.  Please stay turned to the local media coverage when abrupt weather occurs for quick and complete information.

FIELD TRIPS

Field trips are taken by the classes during the school year.  Students are required to have signed parental permission in order to participate.  This form is usually signed by the parent at registration.  As necessary, the teachers will request chaperons to accompany classes for field trips.  Because of the responsibility of watching the class, it is requested that preschoolers not accompany the chaperon.

NEW STUDENTS

When a student is registering in the Perryton ISD for the first      time, it will be necessary to have an original birth certificate,      immunization records, report cards from the previous school,       and proof of address.  Students will also need to bring their     social security card.

Immunizations required are DPT, Polio, Rubella (German Measles), Rubeola (Red Measles) for ages 5-10 and TB Skin

Test for grades 1-7. Parents will have to verify that their child has had chicken pox.  If the child has not, then he or she will need to get the shot that is now available.

THE SCHOOL DAY

Unless otherwise notified, your child will be dismissed promptly at dismissal times.  We ask that parents of PPCD, Headstart, Pre-k, and Kindergarten students to not make their children wait after school.  Children who do not leave the campus promptly will be brought to the office so we may call their parents to come for them.  Students arriving at school in the morning should go directly to their rooms and sit quietly in the hall outside the classroom door.  Running and playing in the halls are absolutely prohibited.  If you bring your child to school, please say good-bye at the front door.  The children can go to the classroom by themselves.  The halls will be monitored.

If, in the event of an emergency, it is necessary for your child to leave school early, come by the office and sign your child out on our check-out sheet.  If your child arrives at school during the school day or returns to the school after signing out (for doctor’s appointments, etc.), he or she must sign into school in the office.

We must have your cooperation for your child’s safety and accurate record keeping.

SUPPLIES

Children are expected to provide their own expendable supplies such as paper, pencils, crayons, etc.  Each teacher will tell the students the supplies needed.  Local merchants (Gibson’s, Alco, United, etc.) have the official list for supply needs at Perryton Kinder.

WITHDRAWALS

When a student is going to withdraw, please notify the office at least one day in advance or sooner, if possible.  This is necessary so that the proper records can be processed.  Parents will receive a withdrawal form to present to the next school the student is to attend.  Official records will be sent by mail.  Official records cannot be carried to the next school by parents or guardians.

PARENT INFORMATION

It is absolutely necessary that we have your correct address and telephone number at all times.  We also need to know your current place of employment.  If your address or place of employment changes during the year, please send the information to the office.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Physical activity is essential to the child’s complete development.  Physical fitness goes hand in hand with mental fitness.  Students are required and encouraged to participate in P.E.  We need a signed written statement from the parent to excuse a pupil from physical exercises.  If it is necessary to have a child excused for more than three successive P.E. periods or permanently, we need a signed statement from your physician.

PROTECTION OF STUDENT RIGHTS UNDER 20 U.S.C. 1232h

Parents have the right to inspect all instructional materials, including teacher’s manuals, films, tapes, or other supplementary material, that will be used in connection with any survey, analysis, or evaluation as part of any program funded in whole or in part by the U.S. Department of Education.  Please contact your child’s principal if you desire an appointment to review such materials.

If your children are under the age of 18, they will not be required to participate in a survey, analysis, or evaluation as part of any program funded in whole or in part by the U.S. Department of Education that reveals information concerning the following topics without your prior written consent.

1.      Political affiliations.

2.      Mental and psychological problems potentially embarrassing to the student or his or her family.

3.      Sexual behavior and attitudes.

4.      Illegal, anti-social, self-incriminating, and demeaning behavior.

such as those of lawyers, physicians, and ministers.

7.      Income (other that that required to determine a child’s

eligibility for participation in a program or for receiving

financial assistance under such a program.).

If your children are 18 or older or are emancipated minors, they will have the opportunity to give or withhold consent to participate in the survey, analysis, or evaluation.
